The opening ceremony of the International Sambo tournament of category A in sports and combat sambo “President’s Cup of the Republic of Tatarstan” was held on October 5th at AK BARS Martial Arts Palace.
The competitions were held from October 4th to 7th in 27 weight categories. Athletes from 27 countries competed to qualify for the title of Masters of Sports and also to win the qualifying points of the ranking to participate in the European Games 2019.
The opening ceremony of the second edition " President’s Cup of the Republic of Tatarstan " was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan Vasil Shaykhraziev, deputy secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Rashid Nurgaliev, president of the European Sambo Federation and Russian Sambo Federation Sergey Eliseev, First Deputy Minister of Sport and Youth Khalil Shaykhutdinov, president of Sambo Federation of the Republic of Tatarstan Ivan Egorov, the judo champion of the Soviet Union and Europe Khalil Biktashev.
Vasil Shaykhraziev welcomed the participants on behalf of the President of the Republic of Tatarstan in the first place: “I wish all participants of the tournament fair play and honest refereeing. We are proud to host this Cup for the second time in Kazan. It is important that there is a solid base with sports complexes, where we are able to host international competitions. We are happy that more than 3 thousand inhabitants of Tatarstan practise this beautiful type of sport”.
Rashid Nurgaliev congratulated the visitors of the capital of Tatarstan as well as the participants of the tournament for the opening on behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Sambo Federation. He wished them great victories and spectacular fights.
The President of the European Sambo Federation and Russian Sambo Federation Sergey Eliseev greeted the participants on his behalf and conveyed greetings from the President of the International Sambo Federation Vasily Shestakov:
“This year is very crucial for Sambo. On November 16 we will celebrate 80th anniversary of Sambo. 100 cities in Russia will host the Sambo tournaments dedicated to its 80th anniversary. We have launched a federal project called ‘Sambo in school’ in school № 31 as part of the ‘President’s Cup of the Republic of Tatarstan’. All children in Kazan could join our project. In a simple general education school your children will learn self-defense techniques. We plan to launch this project on an international scale. ”
