Nowadays Sports sambo is one of the most successful sports in Georgia. There are 27 world champions and 24 European champions in Sambo. From 1973 to the present day, Georgian Sambo wrestlers won 37 gold medals at the world championships and 38 gold medals at the European championships. So, there are silver and bronze medals are five, six times more in Georgia.
The five-time world champion and a multiple-time European champion Vakhtang Chidrashvili should be noted among the active athletes.
There is also a younger generation of sambo wrestlers, which has been preparing, to replace the Georgian national team. Our Cadets, Youth and Juniors with great success participate in international competitions.
The memorial tournament established by us, named after the champion of the world and Europe Archil Chokhely, is gaining popularity every year. The tournament has been assigned category B, but in the near future it is planned to raise the level to category A.
The Georgian Sambo Federation held the Georgian Sambo Cup at the end of 2018 (December 18-19), which became the qualifying competition for the upcoming World Cup in Moscow.
