The International SAMBO Federation (FIAS) has been officially recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as an IPC Recognised International Federation. This status acknowledges FIAS’s efforts in developing the SAMBO discipline for blind and visually impaired athletes and places FIAS among just 15 international sports federations worldwide to receive such recognition.
FIAS President Vasily Shestakov commented:
“We are truly pleased that the International Paralympic Committee has acknowledged FIAS’s commitment to the development of SAMBO for blind and visually impaired athletes. These athletes step onto the mat, compete, and achieve victories despite significant challenges. Their strength of character, courage, and determination inspire deep respect. They are not only champions in SAMBO but true heroes and role models for the entire sporting community. They prove that human potential goes far beyond physical limitations.”
Shestakov emphasized that IPC recognition validates the significant progress made and opens new opportunities to support and grow SAMBO for blind and visually impaired athletes around the world.
“This is another important step on the path toward SAMBO’s Olympic future. I would especially like to thank the entire FIAS team, for whom this is not just a project but a true mission — and in particular Roman Novikov, Chair of the FIAS Commission for Athletes with Disabilities. Thanks to his dedication, professionalism, and personal example, SAMBO for the blind and visually impaired has achieved international recognition.”
According to the IPC, Only sports that are classed as an IPC International Federation or Recognised International Federation are permitted to submit applications for Para sports to be considered for inclusion in the Paralympic Games sport programme.
Over the past two years, SAMBO for blind and visually impaired athletes has seen significant international development. In 2023, competitions in this discipline were included for the first time in the Asia and Oceania SAMBO Championships held in Astana, Kazakhstan. Later that year, athletes also took part in the World Combat Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 2024, the first medals in this discipline were awarded during the World SAMBO Championships, once again held in Astana.
To become an IPC Recognised International Federation, sport governing bodies must act as the sole worldwide representative of a specific Para sport, demonstrate satisfactory evidence of Para sport activity, be in compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the related International Standards, comply at all times with the IPC Classification Code and the related International Standards, and have a formal constitution and regulations.
