The Fourth International sambo tournament “Ivan Doctorov”

July 13

On July 11, 2026, the Sofia Gymnasium was filled with energy, sporting spirit, and emotion during the IV Ivan Doctorov International Sambo Tournament for Cadets. This event once again united the young hopes of this beautiful and dynamic sport and cemented its place among the most significant international cadet Sambo competitions.

More than 130 young sambists from 11 countries took to the mat to demonstrate their skills, character, and desire to win. The Sofia Gymnasium was transformed into a true Sambo festival — with intense matches, a commendable sporting spirit, and the strong support of coaches, parents, official guests, and fans of the sport.

The tournament was well organized, with an atmosphere of friendship, mutual respect, and fair competition. The event was organised by the Balkan Sambo Association under the auspices of the European Sambo Federation and with the assistance of the Bulgarian Sambo Federation. The young sambists demonstrated high motivation, courage, and determination, and each match brought new emotions to both participants and spectators.

The competition once again demonstrated its massive and international appeal. Along with the traditional teams from the Balkan countries that participate in the tournament annually, young sambists from Armenia, Italy, and France also performed in the Sofia Hall. After a lengthy absence, their return to the Bulgarian mat was a significant moment, further enhancing the prestige and significance of the Ivan Doctors tournament.

The highest recognition of the efforts made was the satisfaction of the participants, coaches, guests, and spectators. The children’s smiles, the emotions on the mat, and the new friendships formed demonstrated that the tournament is fulfilling its most important purpose: to unite and inspire.

Roberto Ferraris, Secretary General of the European Sambo Federation, who attended the tournament, noted: “The tournament in Sofia was a complete success! We witnessed incredible competition from the 14-16 year-old cadets. The pace, emotion, and technique demonstrated by the young sambists were admirable. The Bulgarian side did a great job—the organization was impeccable, and the warm welcome made this event a memorable one for all delegations. I congratulate the winners and runners-up, and wish them continued success. European Sambo has a wonderful young generation!”
