Sambo has a long history in Latvia. The first open European championship was held in Riga in 1972. Since that time there were many major international competitions. In 2007 the European championship among youth and juniors was organised in Liepaja. In October 2011 the world championship among youth and juniors was held in Riga. In 2013 the European championship among cadets (15-16 years) was held in the capital of Latvia.

The Latvian athletes won many medals in the international competitions. Vyacheslav Romanyuk (-87 kg) won the silver medal in the world championship among youth and juniors in 2011. In the same year Vladislav Cherniavskis (-82 kg) took the third place in combat sambo in the world championship in Lithuania.
